An Experiment in Eating

So this is New Year's,
And what have we done?
Another year over,
A new one just begun.
--blatant paraphrase of John Lennon,
Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

It looks as though we've been having a party.
--John Blocher, looking at the food on the kitchen counter

It was another low key holiday here. I watched my Strange Days at Blake Holsey High marathon, went grocery shopping both with and without John, watched our new DVD of What Dreams May Come, mostly with John, ate some semi-bad food, watched Hilary Duff all grown up and post-stroke Dick Clark on ABC on tape delay :( and listened to some silly post-Airplane comedies on tv while messing with my computer. Exciting, huh?

Seeing as how I plan to lose weight in 2006, this was supposed to be my last day of indulging in high-carb, high calorie foods. But that's a little hard to do at Safeway, which is the only place I've been today. I got beefy macaroni at the deli, which was so tasteless that I gave half of it to the dog. I got blue corn chips, but they just didn't excite. Ditto the Triscuits.

And that was sort of the point. I was hoping to really eat wonderful, high-calorie foods to my heart's content, and discover that they weren't that great after all, and end up actually longing for good, healthy meats and salads tomorrow. But the reduced calorie Cherry Garcia was great, and I lost the Hershey bar.

Still, I think I'm about ready to do this. One of the ideas behind the month-long pumpkin binge was to indulge in a favorite flavor until I was actually tired of it. I've done that. And I've also had most of the things people eat this time of year, except for latkas and fruitcake and (yuck) mince pie.

The trick this year will be avoiding the candy and bagels and cookies and cakes that keep turning up at work. Oh, and getting back to the gym, of course.

I do have one more food-related regret. On Monday I bought a sampler pack of Disney hot chocolate in Sorceror Blue (with Mickey on the can), Galaxy Green (with Buzz Lightyear) and Rock 'n' Roll Red (with Stitch). I've only had the blue cocoa so far - twice - and now I can't try the other two unnatural cocoa drinks. Ah, well. At least the cans are still neat-looking!

Once again, folks, Happy New Year!

You are lucky I think. Blue Cocoa does not appeal very much, I fear.

Happy New Year and good luck with the resolution. I would have to watch out for Wheat Thins, I can't eat just one!
