EMPS: Late Night Munchies

For Ellipsis Monday Photo Shoot #20: Snack Time!, Carly is looking for afternoon snacks, midnight snacks, anytime snacks, and the dishes they're served in. The snacks and evidence thereof that I'll be showing you are definitely of the "after midnight" variety. So what else is new?

Cocoa and yogurt - no, not consumed together!

As it happens, when I read Carly's entry I had just eaten a small carton of cherry yogurt. Next to it you can see a coffee cup, but it's not for coffee. Oh, no.

Saturday night's empty cocoa cup

This is one of two or three cups I like to use for hot chocolate. You can see the dregs of Saturday night's cocoa along the rim; I'll be washing the cup in a few minutes. There are several things I like about this particular cup:
  1. John never uses it, so it isn't contaminated with coffee or coffee stains.
  2. It's big enough that if I'm careful I can microwave hot chocolate without it boiling over.
  3. It's a classic old fashioned design and color, and reminds me of both a coffee cup my Mom had 40+ years ago and the one Giles uses in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The last few bites of a pre-Christmas Cadbury dark chocolate bar.

Here's what's left of a Cadbury bar I bought around Christmas Eve, possibly several days before that. I've been gradually nibbling away at it, and breaking off pieces to add to the hot chocolate.

Safeway's "English muffin bread."

Here's a bit of an oddity. I believe I mentioned it once before. Safeway markets it as "English muffin bread." Does it taste like English muffins? Well, maybe a little. Does it have the same texture? No, not really. But it does taste good toasted. Because I bought a loaf of this a week or so ago, we were inspired to get our toaster out of the cupboard for the first time in about a decade and start to use it.

English muffin toast with veggie cream cheese.

Here are two slices and a very thin heel from the English muffin bread, all toasted and spread with butter and veggie cream cheese. Good stuff! The plate it's on isn't particularly photogenic, but it's historic. It's the last of our Healthy Choice plates from 1979, back when that brand was packaged on a reusable, microwavable plastic plate. We save some of them and even bought a few at thrift stores, back when we first got married and had no money for dishes. Over the years they've been broken, burned, hopelessly stained or just plain lost, but this last one is still hanging in there.

Be sure to check Ellipsis every Monday for the Ellipsis Monday Photo Shoot topic, and for links to the previous week's participating entries. I'm a little behind in making the rounds myself, but hope to catch up tomorrow.

I spent about twelve hours today updating many of my Quantum Leap and Madeleine L'Engle-related web pages on mavarin.com, along with the main page of the site. Most of those pages were written in Adobe PageMill in 1997 and posted on AOL Hometown, so they were full of bad links, outdated code and rookie mistakes. But they're much better now!

Your pictures always have a fascinating "slice of life" quality to them, Karen. They made me hungry for everything you had eaten, especially that toasted English muffin bread! (I used to have a recipe for that -- it was wonderful!)

Hi Karen

Goodness, I just love veggie cream cheese. Noah's makes a particularly delicious one and Shilling makes a nice mix that can be added to plain cream cheese. YUMMY! So is the hot chocolate, tis the season for that!

I just love cadbury chocolates! I usually have to hide them from the sons, otherwise the chocolates will be gone in no time.

I love your coffee cup .... er, cocoa cup. I like a big cup with a big handle too - none of this thin china stuff.

I love English muffins but stopped buying them when I read the ingredients. High fructose corn syrup!! begone!
